General Information and Program Requirements |
All students are required to complete 50 hours of community service as part of their Government course requirement in order to graduate from Highland Park High School. In order to maximize student learning and community benefits, students should complete approximately 12 hours in each of their four years. Students are always permitted to work on this requirement during the summer. Service completed after June 1 is applied to the succeeding school year. Students may not receive credit for service hours completed prior to their enrollment as a student at Highland Park High School or transfer hours from another school Transfer students must complete 6 hours of community service for each semester enrolled at Highland Park High School.
Volunteer work alone does not fulfill this requirement. Projects must benefit those in need. Some of the resources that students may use for community service credit include hospitals, social service agencies, fundraising organization for health causes, schools, service projects, and others. There is no limit to the number of hours that may be earned on an individual project. Service opportunities will be posted in the Community Service Room.
Service hour monitoring sheets should normally be turned in within 30 days after the completion of the project in order to receive credit. An updated record of community service hours will be posted at the beginning of each month in the Community Service Room. Seniors must complete all 50 hours before they will be eligible to participate in graduation exercises. Please address any questions related to community service to the Dean of Students for Leadership and Service.
