  Youth Program - Stewpot.org
Need volunteers to work with the Children and Youth Programs at the Stewpot. We are serving more students than every before and while we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with so many children, our high enrollment makes it crucial that we have enough volunteers to staff our classrooms.

over 200 "at-risk" children and youth are served through our programs. Volunteers are needed for Saturday School program, from 8:30-1:00, several Saturdays throughout the year. Currently, we have a need for volunteers to serve as classroom assistants in our classes, which include art, gym, games, reading, and many more. For more information online, visit www.thestewpot.org and click on "ways to help" and then follow the links that provide information about the Children and Youth Programs.

The St. Thomas Community Garden &growing food to fight hunger where we live.

The first Millennium Development Goal set forth by the United Nations in 2000 was to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger wherever they occur.

In May 2007, a group of parishioners at the Episcopal Church of St. Thomas the Apostle looked at the vacant lot next to their church and wondered how they could put it to better use. They wondered if they could do something for the community in which they lived. Over the course of many months they worked to turn the vacant lot next to their church into a community garden aimed at providing fresh, nutritious food to local food pantries.

They now have two large plots dedicated to growing food for North Dallas Shared Ministries and the Resource Center of Dallas. Gardeners in 16 private plots are growing food for themselves with a promise to donate 10 percent of their personal crops to the food pantries too.

The first crop was planted in the spring of 2008 and over the course of the summer they have harvested over 2000 lbs of fresh greens and vegetables for the food pantries. One hundred sweet potato plants have already been planted for fall and more fall crops will be planted soon.

Community gardening not only provides fresh food to the community but it also: 1)brings people together, 2)improves community interactions, 3)reduces crime and 4)beautifies the landscape. Its also a lot of work! We need volunteer groups to donate an occasional Saturday morning to help weed and work the garden. Its a very rewarding experience and a great way to donate your time to benefit the community in which we live.

Nov 14th the Dallas Help the Homeless Walkathon & 5k will take place. Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance operators of The Bridge is the beneficiary. As we all know the homeless are under counted, but in the latest local numbers 51% are women & children. African American males, many of whom are veterans, comprise a large measure of that population. Here are a few facts about the upcoming event: It starts & ends at City Hall Plaza and parking is free below There is a decent start time of 9 am The 2 mile walk is an easy stroll thru downtown Dallas' most famous landmarks The walk is dog and family friendly as is the newly added 5k, (runners w/dogs asked to not obstruct the way of "racing runners.") Registrants receive a tee shirt designed by a child attending summer camp for homeless kids. Homeless people are present, given free tee shirts & we invited a couple ogentlemennt to join us in the walk. We both learned a lot, and were reminded that only circumstances & a little luck, differentiated us. Even just mingling and saying good morning appeared to make some difference to a population that largely feels forgotten and invisible. A band will participate in the post race entertainment 2 links follow which give all details about the race, the bridge and include registration information. http://www.helpthehomelessdallas.org/ http://www.helpthehomelessdallas.org/ THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENT

  Dec 5, 2009 - Salvation Army - Kettle Day
Bell Ringing is by far our greatest need, because every volunteer we lack, we have to pay someone to ring at our kettles. And the money raised in the kettles does more than help out at Christmas: it helps fund our programs year round. So every dollar saved from paying for a Bell Ringer goes directly back to the services we provide in that community.

This year, we are doing something special with bell ringing. We are calling the public to action for our Community Kettle Day. On Saturday, December 5th, our goal is to cover our entire Metroplex with Volunteer Bell Ringers. This amounts to over 500 kettles, which would contribute to thousands of dollars being saved for our Community Centers. The kettle sites are open from 10:00AM to 8:00PM, Monday through Saturday. You can commit to a full-day or a half-day (10-3; 3-8).

We are also flexible to your needs if this date doesnt work, but we wanted to at least make you aware of the challenge we are facing.

You can reach Annie Meredith by phone at (214) 637-8275 or email Annie_Meredith@uss.salvationarmy.org
